Process
Standard Project Flow
Client Defines the Project
- What objective will this training meet?
- Who are the audience?
- What knowledge will it impart and/or behaviors will it change, and how?
- How will you like it to be delivered?
- What resources will you allocate to it?
- What’s your project timeline?
Client Provides the Content
- Will you use existing content?
- Do you need new content? How will you get it?
- If you’re gathering it from Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), do you need my help?
- You approve all content & hand it over to me before Step 3.
I Design It
- With all project requirements and content available to me, I use my experience, instructional design methodologies, and creativity to develop the most effective training possible.
I Prototype It; Client Reviews it (First Review Cycle)
- I develop a representative sample of the training, normally as a working prototype, to demonstrate the visual design and functionality.
- You review, and we work together until it’s approved.
I Build It; Client Review It (Second and Third Review Cycles)
- I build the course in Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate.
- I build other pieces and parts as needed. (Job aids, QR guides, etc.)
- You review. We work jointly until final approval.
I Deliver It; Client Takes It from There
- I provide you with the final course files.
- You deploy it onto your LMS. (Or deliver it via the intended method for the project.)
Client Evaluates It / Provides Me with Feedback
- Is it meeting/exceeding client’s intended goals?
- Is it successfully imparting new knowledge and/or changing targeted behaviors?
- What’s most successful about it?
- How could it be improved, and in what timeframe?
Content
What is Content Readiness?
This describes how ready the content is for me to start the design and development process. Four levels of readiness are:
No Content
No content exists for the course. The content needs to be sourced by me from other materials, internal Subject Matter Experts (SME) interviews, research, and other means in order to write comprehensive content.
Some Content
Some content exists to form a structure and background for the content, but significant gaps still exist between what is readily available and the ultimate content needed to develop the project. I will need to conduct research, interviews, and perform writing tasks to fill these gaps.
Some Gaps
Most of the necessary content exists, but there are some gaps that need to be filled through SME interviews and other research and writing activities by me.
Design Ready Content
The full content needed for the course has been compiled and ready to be provided to start designing with a few hours of work with a SME.

Technology
Authoring Tools
I primarily use Articulate Storyline for eLearning development. It is a de-facto industry standard and extensively used by Instructional System Designers (ISDs) the world over. When need dictates, I also use Adobe Captivate for responsive content development.
To roll-out training successfully, Moodle LMS is a great platform. With Moodle LMS, clients can automate and centralize their training delivery and management at a much lower cost compared to Enterprise LMS. I provide guidance in Moodle deployment and administration, as well as customization, with SCORM/TinCan xAPI compliance.
